Independent WPS decisions

AWS D1.1 WPS technical guides

Choose the decision you need to make. Each guide states its code basis and limits, then points to a working tool, record or service route where that helps finish the task.

Edition used here: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition plus the registered July 28, 2026 base-edition errata. AMD1 is not included. The governing contract edition and actual project records must be checked before a production WPS is prepared.

Choose the preparation route

Prequalified WPS or existing-PQR WPS? Compare the evidence for each path and separate an unknown record from a confirmed need for new qualification.

How do you select a tubular butt or T/Y/K joint route? Choose the Clause 10 branch, keep local Ψ separate from groove angle φ, and distinguish prequalified details from PQR support.

How does a sloped non-tubular T-joint change weld geometry? Use the Figure 5.4/Table 4.2 branch for local member angle Ψ, process and position.

Does a WPS change need revision or requalification? Separate a change within the written procedure, a new prequalified WPS, and a PQR essential-variable trigger.

How do you select a prequalified CJP detail? Carry the exact Figure 5.1 process, position, groove, backing construction and notes into the WPS.

How do you determine PJP effective size? Read S from the selected Figure 5.2 row and check the independent Table 5.8 minimum.

When does a groove weld need backing or removal? Compare steel backing, the limited non-steel backing route, backgouging, and the CJP/PJP boundary.

How do you select a prequalified non-tubular fillet detail? Choose the Figure 5.3 joint, process and thickness branch, then check minimum size and fit-up.

Review an existing PQR

What thickness does the PQR actually cover? Work through a bounded CJP plate example and keep base-metal thickness separate from per-process weld deposit.

How do you review a multi-process PQR? Trace each process segment, deposited thickness, variables and supporting record independently.

How do you map actual PQR values to essential variables? Apply Tables 6.6 and 6.8 from recorded values without turning thresholds into unsupported production ranges.

Is missing PQR information unknown or unsupported? Separate an unresolved record gap from a known scope limit and a confirmed requalification trigger.

Which production positions does the PQR cover? Select the plate or tubular test branch and keep procedure coverage separate from welder qualification.

What pipe diameter does a tubular PQR qualify? Apply Tables 10.8–10.11 to the actual coupon and target weld; keep the limited 24 in plate-test T/Y/K route separate.

Can an older AWS D1.1 PQR support a new WPS? Verify the original edition, date and test evidence without relabeling the historical qualification.

When does a WPS or PQR need CVN evidence? Separate filler classification toughness, project CVN requirements and procedure qualification variables.

How does postweld heat treatment affect the WPS? Check the procedure route, PQR support and the production cycle record before changing a PWHT condition.

Check a process or temperature condition

Where should weld current, voltage, wire size, gas and travel speed come from? Trace each parameter to the exact consumable or PQR, then distinguish Table 5.5 operating tolerances from Table 6.6/6.8 qualification triggers.

Can short-circuit GMAW be prequalified? The process route, what an existing PQR must show, and why filler matching alone is insufficient.

How do you find minimum preheat for a two-member joint? A step-by-step Table 5.11 comparison with a bounded A572 Grade 50 / Grade 60 example.

What proves low hydrogen, and how should consumables be handled? Separate A4.3 test results, electrode suffixes, Annex B H1/H2/H3 assumptions and Clause 7.3 storage/exposure controls.

How do you set interpass temperature? Keep the minimum and any evidence-backed maximum separate across the prequalified and PQR routes.

What weather, cleaning and tack instructions belong in a WPS? Turn Clause 7 site and preparation rules into specific checks before welding.

Prepare and review the actual document

The guides explain bounded decisions. Use the project input checklist to collect facts, the blank WPS layout for a supported production document, and the technical review register to track unresolved fields before issue.

These materials do not create tests, PQRs, Engineer approval, or a ready-to-use WPS from missing inputs. The edition-basis page explains the version boundary.
