Why one row per PQR is not enough
A PQR may support some production conditions and leave others unsupported. For multi-process work, the same coupon can contain multiple process segments with different fillers, pass roles, parameters and deposited weld-metal thicknesses. Record an individual row for each PQR × process segment × relevant production-scope branch, then link rows that belong to the same coupon or combined procedure.
The matrix preserves three distinct states: actual evidence copied from the record; code-supported range derived using the applicable qualification path; and final WPS range selected for the intended job. The second state requires a rule and source locator; it is not a free-text expansion from the measured value.
Review sequence
Verify record identity and legibility. Capture PQR ID/revision, company name on record, code edition/date, coupon ID and exact file/page locators. Link test reports and note failed tests, retests and adopted results as actually recorded.
Classify the test branch. Record plate, pipe or tubular coupon; CJP, PJP, fillet, plug or slot test; qualification method; geometry, backing and backgouging. For tubular qualification, identify the Clause 10 branch rather than borrowing a plate position mapping.
Map materials and production geometry. Record both coupon sides separately, grade, product condition and thickness. Compare the target combination using the applicable material coverage basis. Record position and pipe/tubular size separately from production targets.
Trace every process segment. Preserve actual process sequence, filler, diameter, gas, electrical/transfer/waveform settings, parameter values and units, pass count and measured deposit thickness. Link every segment to a specific PQR and source location.
Derive and limit the WPS range. Identify the applicable table/paragraph and conditions, then choose a production range that is supported and suitable for the actual job. Keep each variable association intact and record unresolved gaps instead of guessing.
Keep unlike limits separate
| Dimension | Record separately | Common false shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Base-metal thickness | Coupon thickness; code-supported member range; final WPS member range | Copy a base-metal multiplier to every process’s weld-metal deposit thickness |
| Weld-metal deposit | Actual measured thickness by process; relevant supported limit; selected process range | Use total coupon thickness or total weld deposit for each process |
| Position / orientation | Coupon type, test position and direction; production position and direction | Assume a plate mapping covers tubular T/Y/K configurations |
| Process variables | Actual PQR values; applicable variable rule; final WPS values and units | Use prequalified WPS tolerances or typical parameter values for a PQR-based range |
| CVN / PWHT | Requirement source; test or cycle records; applicable supplementary variables | Assume “not stated” means “not required” or “passed” |
When several PQRs are proposed
Do not combine the highest thickness from one PQR, the widest position from another and the largest parameter value from a third into a synthetic qualification. Show which PQR supports each segment and verify that the production assembly, process order and combined variables are jointly supportable. If no traceable support exists for the requested combination, mark that exact range unresolved.
If a PQR was completed to an earlier edition, preserve the actual edition and date. Do not relabel it as a 2025 test. Determine its continuing applicability under the contract and applicable code before using it as support. An old WPS is not a substitute for an underlying PQR or properly documented qualification evidence.
Using the CSV
The editable CSV is intentionally a blank row register. Add rows rather than packing multiple process segments into one cell. Use a stable record key such as PQR ID + coupon ID + segment ID. Put the exact table/paragraph and footnote basis in the rule field, and point the source locator to the scanned page or report identifier. Use explicit values such as unknown, not applicable — reason, supported or unresolved; do not leave ambiguity in a status cell.

Source and limits
Original register structure based on Cavoren’s AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 existing-PQR preparation reference and WPS delivery method, including the project-recorded 2026-07-28 base-edition errata; AMD1 is not included. Applicable contract editions, complete standard clauses, tables, figures, notes and project requirements govern.
