Before using the template
This is a document shell, not a qualification calculator. It intentionally leaves technical values blank. Replace every required placeholder with a verified project value and source, or record a specific reason that a conditional item is not applicable. Keep unresolved required information marked as a preparation draft; do not issue it as a production WPS.
Document control and application scope
Start with WPS number, revision, date, contractor, project/weld identification, governing code edition and errata basis, and units. State the actual basis and supporting PQR IDs where applicable. Define weld type, production positions and progression, member-by-member thickness, tubular diameter where applicable, weld size or effective throat, and any operating limitations.
The template includes distinct member 1/member 2 fields because base-metal combination and side matter. Use the drawing and project requirements for joint geometry; do not infer production dimensions from the qualification coupon.
Joint, consumables and pass schedule
Specify the production joint design drawing and revision, full geometry and fit-up limits, backing and backgouging, and a sketch reference. For each process, identify sequence, operation, pass role, position, filler classification and product, diameter, electrical conditions, gas and flow where applicable, equipment or transfer mode, and parameter ranges with units.
Use separate parameter rows for materially different process segments, positions, pass roles, wire diameters or parameter sets. Link correlated settings and state any heat-input limit, single-pass/layer limit, weave/stringer restriction, or waveform control that applies. An unqualified grid of independently variable endpoints can imply combinations that were never supported.
| Sequence / process | Pass / position | Filler / diameter | Electrical / gas | Production values and units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [segment] | [role / position] | [classification / product] | [conditions] | [supported range] |
| [segment] | [role / position] | [classification / product] | [conditions] | [supported range] |
Temperature, fabrication and approvals
Record minimum preheat, minimum and any required maximum interpass temperature, measurement method/location/timing, PWHT status and actual production cycle. Include preparation and cleaning, consumable handling, tack welds, sequence and distortion control, weather/surface restrictions, and start/stop/crater treatment where relevant.
Leave review and authorization names/signatures for the actual responsible people. A blank approval field must stay blank until that person acts. The WPS does not record welder qualification, production inspection outcomes or test results that have not occurred.
For the existing-PQR route
Use the linked coverage matrix before entering supported ranges. Keep three things distinct in your technical workpapers: the PQR’s actual recorded value, the applicable code-supported range, and the final selected production WPS range. Maintain the link from every process segment to the supporting PQR and source page. Do not combine unrelated PQR extremes into a procedure range without evidence and an applicable rule.
Base-metal thickness and process deposited weld-metal thickness are separate. Record each process’s actual deposited amount from the record and apply only the relevant qualification branch. Do not invent a generic deposit multiplier.

Editable single-file template
The downloadable HTML file contains the same field groups and blank tables in a simple document layout. Open it in a browser or compatible word processor, replace bracketed prompts, and save a controlled working copy. It contains no code values or sample qualification claims.

Field structure adapted from Cavoren’s original internal Clause 5 and existing-PQR WPS outlines and delivery checks, based on AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition plus the 2026-07-28 base-edition errata recorded by the project; AMD1 is excluded. Contract edition and actual project facts control. This is not an AWS form, a completed WPS, engineering approval, qualification record or evidence of compliance.
