Complete one row for each decision
Use the CSV as a repeatable register. Duplicate a row when there are multiple joints, base-metal sides, process segments, PQRs, pass roles or special conditions. Do not collapse distinct evidence into a single general “reviewed” entry.
| Register field | What a useful entry contains |
|---|---|
| Evidence locator | Controlled filename plus page, table, drawing/detail, report, sheet/cell range or manufacturer document revision. “PQR attached” alone is not a locator. |
| Route / basis | Clause 5 prequalified condition and precise applicable reference, or Clause 6 qualification branch tied to a real PQR and segment. Include contract edition where it governs. |
| Disposition | Accepted, unresolved or not applicable. “Not applicable” must include the reason and the condition that makes it inapplicable. |
| Reviewer / action | Reviewer identity and a concrete next action, or the closure evidence/reference. Do not imply approval that has not been given. |
1. Lock document identity and scope
- Confirm the governing AWS D1.1/D1.1M edition from the contract and preserve any older edition actually used by an existing PQR. Do not relabel an old record as 2025.
- Record the unit system used in the WPS and check that each value and range uses that system consistently.
- Match project, manufacturer, WPS identifier/revision, drawing numbers/revisions and intended production weld to the controlled source documents.
- Capture weld type and actual design dimensions from the drawing. Confirm whether the target is CJP, PJP, fillet, plug, slot or a tubular connection; confirm plate/pipe/tubular applicability.
- List contract requirements that affect the WPS, including CVN, PWHT, seismic or other expressly specified conditions. A silent or missing mention is unresolved until its status is established.
Close a scope discrepancy by identifying the controlling document and revision, not by choosing whichever value is easiest to support.
2. Apply the Clause 5 prequalified route
Every applicable prequalification condition must be established for the proposed WPS. A material or process being familiar does not establish the route.
- Confirm the process is eligible for the proposed Clause 5 route. In particular, do not label GMAW-S prequalified; it may be considered only through a genuinely applicable qualification route.
- For each base-metal side, trace specification, grade/class, product condition and thickness to a material certificate or controlled project record. Apply the actual material-group and thickness conditions; do not infer a group from a stronger grade name.
- Trace the joint preparation and dimensions to the complete applicable detail and its notes/footnotes. Verify groove, root opening/face/radius, backing or backgouging, position, thickness limits and any detail-specific restriction. A detail number alone does not prove the required geometry.
- Check filler classification/product, diameter, polarity/current, position, transfer mode and shielding gas as applicable against the relevant prequalification conditions and actual manufacturer/client operating information.
- Establish minimum preheat and interpass limits from the applicable material category, thickness, hydrogen and project conditions. Check PWHT and any other special restriction separately.
- Populate production parameters from a matched product/process/diameter/position/gas source. Table 5.5 is an operating tolerance around chosen settings where applicable; it is not a source of recommended settings. Do not apply its GMAW values to SMAW.
- Check thickness/size and position coverage for the actual weld type and detail. Do not borrow a fillet, groove, plug/slot, tubular or other branch's range.
- Record the selected route as accepted only when each applicable prerequisite is supported. If the prequalified basis fails or remains unproven, check for a real existing PQR; do not infer that new qualification is required from a missing intake field.
3. Apply the existing-PQR Clause 6 route
Use one evidence chain per PQR and process segment. The PQR's actual recorded facts, the range supported by the applicable qualification rules and the range selected for production are three different entries.
- Verify PQR ID/revision, manufacturer, test date, actual qualification edition, coupon identity and legibility. Link original record pages and supporting test reports. An old WPS or summary alone is not the underlying qualification record.
- Classify the actual test assembly and branch: plate, pipe or tubular; CJP, PJP, fillet, plug/slot or direct qualification method; backing/backgouging; position/orientation; and diameter where relevant.
- Record both base-metal sides, material combination, coupon thickness and actual production target. Apply the matching qualification table/branch, including material-combination conditions. Do not treat “higher strength” as blanket coverage.
- For each process segment, transcribe actual sequence, pass role, filler/product/classification/diameter, gas, electrical/transfer/waveform conditions, parameter values with units and source locator.
- Record actual deposited weld-metal thickness and pass data by process from the PQR/records. Keep it separate from base-metal thickness; do not derive per-process deposit from total coupon thickness.
- Derive member thickness, weld type/size, position/orientation and tubular coverage using the appropriate qualification branch. Plate mappings do not establish tubular coverage. Cite the exact table/paragraph, relevant notes and the conditions applied.
- Where CVN is required, link the requirement source to test temperature, specimen/location/size, report/results and acceptance basis, then check applicable supplementary variables. Do not claim CVN qualification based on a filler classification or absent report.
- Where PWHT applies, compare actual PQR condition and evidence with the production requirement and applicable variables. Do not fill an unrecorded production cycle from expectation.
- For waveform-controlled processes, identify equipment/program and actual energy evidence where the applicable rule needs it. Do not infer waveform heat input from ordinary average current and voltage.
- Preserve variable associations and the PQR supporting each process/pass. Do not combine unrelated PQR extremes into a synthetic range or use Clause 5/Table 5.5 tolerances on a PQR-based WPS.
If the records are insufficient, retain the exact unsupported field as unresolved. Missing evidence may block one range or special condition without automatically proving that the project needs new qualification.
4. Check the finished document and release gate
- Every necessary production field is populated or explicitly excluded with a documented reason; no unresolved necessary placeholder remains in an issued production WPS.
- Every numerical value has units, a traceable source and the right relationship to its process, filler diameter, pass role and condition.
- Selected WPS ranges stay within the supported range, actual parameter source and contract requirement together. Do not present a code-supported maximum as the required production setting.
- Joint detail, dimensions, fit-up/acceptance limits and fabrication instructions are explicit enough for the intended work. A code reference alone does not supply a project's design dimensions.
- Preheat/interpass, cleaning, consumable handling, sequence, weather restrictions, backing and other applicable production instructions are stated and consistent with the basis. For weather, surface preparation and tack-weld decisions, use the fabrication conditions guide.
- Document edition, units, identifiers, revisions, cross-references and attachment locators agree throughout the WPS and workpapers.
- Approval/signature fields are blank until the actual responsible person reviews and signs. Do not claim AWS certification, engineering approval, customer approval, inspection or test outcomes that have not occurred.
- Keep commercial pricing, internal preparation records and drafting notes out of the customer WPS.
How the checklist fits the service routes
The service covers a Clause 5 prequalified WPS when the target conditions meet the applicable requirements, or a Clause 6 WPS supported by an applicable existing PQR that covers the target. New qualification or additional required qualification testing is outside the service. A customer having a PQR does not by itself establish the second route.
Original review aid based on Cavoren’s WPS preparation and delivery references for AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition plus the project-recorded 2026-07-28 base-edition errata; AMD1 is excluded. Contract-specified editions govern. The checklist is not an AWS form, qualification determination, engineering design review or approval.
