Clause 5 · Service route
AWS D1.1 prequalified WPS preparation
A complete English production WPS prepared for the project conditions you provide, when all applicable prequalified requirements and contract limits can be met.
What this route covers
Prequalified status is determined from the whole WPS and its intended application. The procedure is prepared only after the applicable code edition, contract conditions and target weld are identified.
- Applicable base-metal specifications, grades and thickness conditions for both sides of the joint.
- Permitted process and process sequence. Clause 5 includes SMAW, SAW, GMAW other than short-circuit GMAW (GMAW-S), and FCAW when the applicable requirements are met.
- Joint type and detail, position, geometry, backing or backgouging conditions, and the relevant size or thickness limits.
- Filler-metal classification and actual product, shielding gas or flux where applicable, and compatible operating information.
- Minimum preheat, interpass limits, and any applicable PWHT, CVN, heat-input or project restrictions.
A process name or material grade alone does not establish eligibility. Conditions must work together, including each process segment in a multi-process WPS.
Project information to provide
Send the records that identify the actual weld and its required production conditions. If a field is not yet known, identify it as unknown instead of guessing.
| Information | Useful source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Governing code and edition; contract notes and unit system | Project specification, purchase order, drawings | The contract edition takes precedence over a default preparation basis. |
| Both base metals, exact grade and product form, thickness | Material certificates, drawings, weld map | Material matching and applicable ranges depend on the actual designation and conditions. |
| Weld identification, CJP/PJP/fillet/plug/slot, detail and position | Drawing, weld symbol, joint detail, fabrication requirements | Geometry and coverage cannot be inferred from a weld label alone. |
| Process by pass or segment, filler product/classification and diameter | Approved shop practice, consumable data, equipment/process notes | Process, consumable and operating limits need to match. |
| Gas/flux, intended parameter source, preheat and interpass constraints | Product data, project requirements, existing procedure notes | Actual operating values and thermal conditions are not invented from a generic example. |
| PWHT, CVN, seismic, cyclic loading or other special requirements | Contract, design notes, Engineer direction | Additional requirements may change the route or exceed this product's prepared scope. |
What the WPS contains
Default delivery is one complete English WPS for the agreed procedure and supported production range. It records the applicable code basis, joint and base-metal details, process sequence, consumables, pass-specific operating variables, temperature requirements, relevant technique controls, and the supported scope and limitations. Project drawing dimensions and actual product-specific parameters must come from the information supplied for that job.
This is procedure preparation. It does not create an unperformed PQR, a test report, an approval signature or a field inspection result.
If a prequalified condition does not fit
A known Clause 5 mismatch does not by itself reject all WPS preparation. If a customer already has a valid and applicable PQR, its record and qualification coverage can be checked under the existing-PQR route. When required information is missing, the specific gap is identified first. New qualification testing is outside this service.
