Use the checklist in three passes
Lock the project basis. Capture the contract’s governing standard and edition, selected unit system, design inputs and required acceptance conditions. Do not silently replace a contract edition with a newer one.
Describe the intended production weld. Identify each side of the joint, actual geometry from the drawing, thicknesses, welding position, process sequence, consumables and requested production limits.
Attach records with locators. Name each file and relevant page, sheet or detail. Mark unknown items as unknown and identify who can resolve them; a blank is not evidence that a condition is absent.
Project and code basis
Record the contractor/manufacturer and project identifiers, drawing numbers and revisions, code designation and edition stated by the contract, unit system, structural category or loading conditions, and any Engineer or client requirements. Note whether CVN, PWHT, seismic, fatigue, corrosion or other special conditions are specified. Attach the relevant specification or mark the exact document location.
Keep requested conditions distinct from engineering decisions. For example, record “CVN required at −20 °C per project specification section X” with its source. Do not infer that CVN is not required because it was not mentioned in an email.
Joint and base-metal information
- Identify member 1 and member 2 separately: specification, grade/class, product form and delivery condition.
- Record actual base-metal thickness on each side and the production thickness range requested.
- Identify CJP, PJP, fillet, plug or slot weld as applicable; give weld size, effective throat or penetration requirement.
- Provide drawing/detail ID and revision, joint orientation, groove type and dimensions, root opening/face/radius, backing, backgouging and fit-up tolerances.
- State plate, pipe or tubular construction; include outside diameter and connection type where relevant.
- Give intended welding positions and vertical progression where applicable; distinguish production orientation from any test position in qualification records.
A joint callout or a weld symbol alone may not show every dimension needed for a production WPS. Supply a dimensioned detail or approved drawing reference rather than guessing omitted geometry.
Process, consumables and production conditions
For each process segment, state process, operation (manual, semiautomatic, mechanized or automatic), sequence and pass role. Provide filler AWS specification/classification, manufacturer and product, diameter, and the actual gas classification/composition and flow for gas-shielded processes. Include polarity/current type, power-source characteristic, transfer mode, waveform controls, flux and SAW setup when those fields apply.
Provide the parameter source for the intended production settings: client procedure, equipment/product datasheet or other identified basis. Separate root, fill and cap ranges when they differ. Include heat-input limits, preheat/interpass conditions, PWHT, cleaning, consumable storage, weather constraints, tacks and sequence where required by the project or production plan.
When an existing PQR may be needed
Send the full legible qualification record and its supporting test reports, not just an old WPS or an unreadable summary. For every PQR, capture its identifier and revision, manufacturer on record, code edition, test date, test assembly type, weld type, base materials and thicknesses, position/orientation and pipe or tubular diameter where applicable.
Include process-by-process actual values and deposited weld-metal thickness, filler/gas/electrical details, preheat/interpass and PWHT records, and test reports for mechanical tests, NDT and CVN when required. Record page numbers or file locations. A summary that omits a required test result leaves that evidence unresolved; it does not justify filling a value from a typical practice.
Gap log and handoff
For every unanswered item, write the exact missing fact, its source expected, the person or document that can resolve it, and whether it blocks only one field or the route conclusion. Ask a focused follow-up tied to the missing evidence. Unknown does not mean “not applicable,” and a missing field alone does not prove that new qualification is required.
Editable checklist contents
The CSV is a working register with columns for workstream, field, requested information, evidence/source locator, status and follow-up owner. Add rows for multiple joints, materials, process segments and records. It contains no prefilled customer or qualification data.

Prepared from Cavoren’s AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 WPS intake and delivery references, including the Clause 5 and existing-PQR evidence distinctions. The service reference basis records the 2025 base edition and its 2026-07-28 base-edition errata; AMD1 is not included. Contract-specified editions take precedence. This checklist is an original collection aid, not an AWS publication, qualification decision, engineering design review or substitute for the governing standard and project documents.
