Single-side and double-side groove construction
When does an AWS D1.1 groove weld need backing or removal?
Backing is part of the selected joint construction. For non-tubular Clause 5 CJP details, the decision depends on the exact Figure 5.1 row and whether the weld is made from one side, backgouged and welded from both sides, or uses a specific exception. A generic note such as “full penetration” does not settle the route.
Decision matrix
| Construction proposed | Code path to check | WPS / drawing action | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-sided non-tubular CJP with steel backing | Match a Figure 5.1 CJP row that specifies single steel backing; apply its joint geometry, process, position, thickness conditions and notes. | Identify the backing as steel, include required dimensions/fit-up from the selected detail or project drawing, and state whether it remains or is removed under the applicable project and loading requirements. | “Steel backing” alone does not choose a qualified groove detail or establish unlimited dimensions. |
| Single-sided non-steel backing | Use the limited Clause 5.4.1.3 path: remove the non-steel backing after welding, backgouge to sound metal and weld the reverse side. | Write the removal, sound-metal backgouging and reverse-side welding sequence. Confirm that the selected qualified detail and project conditions support the construction. | Do not treat removable ceramic, flux or other non-steel backing as an interchangeable retained backing option for this single-sided CJP route. |
| Weld from both sides with backgouging | Use the open double-sided Figure 5.1 detail where its row carries note d. | Specify backgouging to sound metal before welding the reverse side, then apply both-side sequence and the row's geometry/tolerances. | Two-side access alone does not mean a row requiring backgouging can omit it. |
| Weld from both sides without backgouging | Clause 5.4.2.1 generally places this in the PJP route, subject to the stated 10.10.2 and Figure 5.1 B-L1-S exceptions. | Verify the exact exception before describing it as a CJP. Otherwise classify and size it using the applicable PJP rule and design requirement. | Do not generalize the exception to other processes, details or joint constructions. |
Steel backing is not a one-size-fits-all detail
Figure 5.1 rows identify their construction. For example, SI B-U2a is a single-steel-backing CJP family whose SMAW flat-position row lists T1=U, R=6 mm and α=45°; its vertical/overhead alternatives are separate rows with different R/angle combinations. The GF rows have their own process notes and row conditions. The WPS must preserve the exact selected row rather than combine convenient dimensions from different alternatives.
Clause 7.2.2 sets fabrication requirements for backing and spacers. Backing material and compatibility, backing weld metal where used, fit-up and the applicable inspection/design conditions remain relevant. The detail table should not be used to invent a backing thickness or width when the controlling figure or project drawing has not established it.
Retained backing depends on loading and design requirements
The fabrication provisions distinguish static from cyclic loading and provide rules for steel backing direction, attachment/removal and Engineer-specified conditions. The applicable design category and drawing govern whether backing may remain and what its orientation or treatment must be. Where the project specifies backing removal or a fatigue-sensitive detail, follow that requirement and the corresponding complete code provision.
This page deliberately does not state a universal “always retain” or “always remove” rule. Clause 5 detail eligibility, Clause 7 fabrication and the design's loading requirements answer different parts of the decision. Resolve all three before the WPS describes the final root construction.
How the selected row changes the work sequence
- Single-sided steel-backed detail: prepare the groove and backing to the selected Figure 5.1 dimensions and fit-up tolerances, weld the specified side, and record the disposition of backing as required by the project and fabrication rules.
- Non-steel backing route: weld from the first side, remove the backing, backgouge the reverse side to sound metal, then weld the reverse side. Omitting one of these steps leaves this route unsupported.
- Open double-sided detail with note d: weld the first side, backgouge to sound metal, then weld the other side. Do not replace “to sound metal” with a fixed depth that is not in the selected detail.
These sequences describe the code route, not a project-specific welding sequence or acceptance instruction. Access, drawing detail, process and actual inspection requirements still need review.
Code basis and limits
Basis: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition plus registered base-edition errata dated July 28, 2026; AMD1 is not included. Principal provisions include Clause 5.4.1.3 for the non-steel backing path, Clause 5.4.2.1 for the double-sided/no-backgouging classification and stated exceptions, the selected Figure 5.1 row, and Clause 7.2.2/7.9 for backing fabrication and loading-related conditions. The contract edition governs.
Use the complete controlled standard and design drawings for retained-backing direction, detailed fabrication, fatigue requirements and any Engineer-specified condition. This guide does not approve a design or a specific backing material.
Send the drawing and identify the loading, access and backing disposition requirements.
