Edition and update basis
AWS D1.1 edition basis for WPS preparation
These pages and the prepared rule set use a stated edition and errata set. A project is reviewed to the edition required by its contract.
What is included
| Item | Basis used | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Code text | AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 English base edition | The 2025 base edition is not silently treated as the later AMD1 text. |
| Errata | Registered AWS base-edition errata, notice dated July 28, 2026 | Only corrections applicable to the base edition are included. |
| Amendment 1 | AMD1 is not included in this prepared basis | AMD1-specific rules or errata are not applied to the base edition. |
| Project contract | The edition and requirements stated in the governing contract | The project edition takes precedence; the prepared knowledge set must be checked for that edition before use. |
How edition control works
Code year is part of the technical basis, not a decorative label. Before a customer WPS is prepared, the governing project specification and contract are checked for the required standard, edition, unit system and added requirements. If a different edition is specified, values or rules from the 2025 base edition are not carried over without verification.
When the edition or amendment is unclear, it is identified as an input to resolve. A generic web page cannot decide which edition a particular contract adopts.
Technical scope represented here
The prepared knowledge supports two steel WPS preparation routes: a Clause 5 prequalified WPS when all applicable requirements fit, and a WPS based on a customer's applicable existing PQR where qualification support is needed. The PQR route requires actual traceable records; these pages do not create qualification tests.
- New qualification tests and supplemental testing are outside the WPS preparation product.
- Other code editions or amendments require edition-specific review.
- Specialized scopes such as AWS D1.8 seismic supplements, other welding codes, structural design calculations, and complete field inspection or weld acceptance services are outside this prepared coverage statement.
- Engineer, client and contract acceptance responsibilities remain with the applicable project parties.
How the rule set is maintained
Requirements come from the applicable AWS code text and official errata. Customer drawings, specifications, material records, PQRs and test reports establish project facts. Manufacturer literature helps identify operating conditions for a particular consumable and process; it does not expand qualification coverage.
Rules are checked with their applicable clauses, tables, figures, notes and units. SI and U.S. customary table values are used as written in their respective systems. A source conflict is kept visible and limits conclusions that depend on that specific item; unrelated conditions can still be assessed.
This page describes the knowledge basis and method. It is not an AWS endorsement, certification, approval, or statement that an individual project meets its contract.
Official AWS publication information
AWS provides the D1.1/D1.1M:2025 publication listing and links from it to the code's errata and amendment information. Consult the contract, purchased standard and official notices for the applicable project text.
Public sources last checked October 7, 2026. AWS publication listings may change; the edition required by the project contract remains controlling.
