Process route · AWS D1.1
Can short-circuit GMAW be prequalified under AWS D1.1?
No. GMAW-S (short-circuit transfer) is excluded from Clause 5’s prequalified GMAW process. It may be used under a WPS qualified to Clause 6, when the actual qualification and its supported scope cover the production weld.
Why Clause 5 does not cover GMAW-S
AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 Clause 5.5.1 lists SMAW, SAW, GMAW except GMAW-S, and FCAW as processes that may be prequalified when every applicable Clause 5 provision is met. Clause 5.5.2 separately permits GMAW-S when its WPS is qualified under Clause 6. Clause 6.16.1.1 requires the contractor to prepare and qualify the WPS before use; the GMAW essential-variable limits in Table 6.6 also apply to GMAW-S.
That process classification is independent of filler-metal matching. Even if the electrode classification and gas appear in permitted material tables, that does not provide a Clause 5 exception for short-circuit transfer. Do not relabel the transfer mode on a document: the procedure basis must match how the process was qualified and how production will be welded.
When an existing PQR can support a GMAW-S WPS
An existing PQR may support preparation of a Clause 6 WPS if it records a real, applicable qualification and the production target falls within the qualification rules and actual record. The PQR’s existence or similar-looking settings alone do not establish coverage.
| Review question | Evidence to trace | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Was GMAW-S actually qualified? | The controlled PQR, qualification WPS, test reports and the recorded transfer/process details. | A PQR for spray-transfer GMAW, another process, or an unidentified mode cannot simply be relabeled as GMAW-S. |
| Does the qualification branch fit the target? | Governing code edition; plate or tubular path; test type and joint; base metals and combination; thickness/diameter; position; backing or backgouging; test results. | Apply the relevant Clause 6 tables and notes. Tubular work has its own Clause 10 qualification route and does not inherit plate coverage automatically. |
| Are process variables supported? | For each segment, transcribe actual filler, wire size, current, voltage, transfer mode, gas, polarity, travel speed and other applicable recorded conditions. | Apply Table 6.6’s GMAW limits to GMAW-S and check Table 6.8 when contract CVN requirements make its supplementary variables applicable. |
| Can a production WPS be issued? | A written WPS with a traceable qualification basis and production ranges selected within the supported record, rules and contract. | Unresolved essential scope or missing records leave coverage unproven; they do not establish that a new test has already been performed. |
A bounded review for a real weld
- Lock the contract edition and identify the actual transfer mode for every process segment. If short-circuit transfer is used, remove the Clause 5 prequalified label for that segment.
- Identify the exact PQR offered as support. Confirm its edition, test assembly, test type, materials, joint, test results and process-variable record from the controlled documents.
- Map the target weld against the matching plate or tubular qualification branch, including both base-metal sides, dimensions, position, backing/backgouging and any supplemental CVN condition.
- Compare each production GMAW-S condition with the PQR’s actual values and the applicable Clause 6 variables. Keep each process segment tied to its supporting record; do not combine unrelated PQR extremes into a synthetic range.
- Prepare the WPS only for the scope that is supported. If a required record or scope limit is missing, name that exact gap and leave the route unresolved until it is closed.
The standard permits a Clause 6 route; it does not mean every existing PQR will cover a new weld. New qualification testing is needed when the required basis is not already established, but the actual test route depends on the target and governing edition.
Code basis and related checks
This explanation uses AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition with the registered July 28, 2026 base-edition errata; AMD1 is excluded. Contract-specified editions govern a project. Principal references are 5.5.1–5.5.2, 6.16.1–6.16.1.1, Table 6.6 and, when applicable, Table 6.8. Tubular applications also require the applicable Clause 10 provisions.
Scope limit: This page explains the process route. It does not qualify a procedure, approve a project weld, replace review of the full PQR and contract, or certify production results.
