Existing-PQR review · Clause 10

What pipe diameter does a tubular PQR qualify?

Start from the test actually recorded: pipe, box tubing or plate; CJP butt, PJP, fillet or T/Y/K; nominal pipe outside diameter; test wall or groove depth; position; and joint detail. Clause 10 Tables 10.8–10.11 answer different parts of the question. No single diameter range applies to every tubular PQR.

Direct answer: For a CJP tubular groove test, Table 10.9 maps the recorded pipe coupon and its wall-thickness row to a qualified diameter range. Tables 10.10 and 10.11 send PJP and fillet diameter coverage back to Table 10.9. Table 10.8 addresses test position and production connection category; it does not by itself establish diameter coverage.

Record the coupon and target before reading a range

Actual PQR test results and supporting reportsExact WPS range requestedA table range is usable only if the recorded test and required examinations support that qualification path.

Use the nominal OD stated for the pipe product and the actual test dimensions from the controlled PQR and reports. Do not infer nominal OD from an NPS label alone, or substitute a field-measured outside diameter for the code table's nominal category.

CJP tubular grooveTable 10.9: select job-size pipe or listed standard coupon, the applicable unit column, coupon OD category and test wall-thickness row.For pipe butt and T/Y/K, also select the matching Table 10.8 column and position row. Keep the required Figure 10.17 / backing or backgouging detail and other applicable notes.
PJP tubular grooveTable 10.10 sets the PJP groove-depth and wall-thickness qualification branch; pipe diameter follows Table 10.9.Use the actual PJP test detail and the Table 10.8 connection and position cell.
Tubular fillet T-testTable 10.11 sets single-pass or multiple-pass weld-size coverage; pipe diameter follows Table 10.9.Use Table 10.8 for production position. The required coupon and macroetch results must be in the record.
Box-tube test or plate testApply only the specific transfer provision that fits the test and target. Do not convert a pipe diameter rule into general T/Y/K coverage. For the plate-test T/Y/K route, check Clause 10.14.3 and its minimum target nominal OD and Figure 10.17 detail.

For a CJP job-size coupon, Table 10.9's nominal-OD category and wall-thickness row both matter. In the US customary table, a coupon nominally below 24 in has “test diameter and over” in all three wall rows. For a coupon nominally at least 24 in, the thin row (1/8 through 3/8 in test wall T) still says “test diameter and over”; the two thicker rows say “24 in and over.” Read the SI column independently at its stated 600 mm and 10/20 mm boundaries.

Bounded table-row example: Assume a successful CJP job-size pipe qualification with nominal coupon OD at least 24 in and test wall T = 1/2 in. The Table 10.9 row for 3/8 in < T < 3/4 in lists qualified wall thickness T/2 to 2T and qualified diameter 24 in and over. That row does not establish a real PQR's test acceptance, position, connection type, backing detail, material scope or essential-variable coverage.

The 24 in plate-test route is a narrow T/Y/K exception

Clause 10.14.3 permits a plate qualification test under Clause 6.10 for a tubular T/Y/K joint when the nominal outside diameter of the production pipe is at least 24 in [600 mm] and the Figure 10.17 joint detail is used. This is a specific plate-to-tubular T/Y/K path. It does not make a plate PQR a general qualification for pipe butt welds, smaller-diameter T/Y/K joints, or any T/Y/K geometry.

Keep this target-joint exception separate from Table 10.9, which starts from an actual qualifying tubular coupon and gives the applicable CJP diameter range. Also keep Table 10.8 separate: its position and connection cells do not replace Table 10.9's dimensional coverage.

Pipe butt and T/Y/K are not interchangeable

For tubular butt joints, select the pipe-butt CJP/PJP production column in Table 10.8. For a tubular T/Y/K target, select the corresponding T/Y/K column; a blank or shaded cell is not coverage. Apply all cell footnotes. In particular, the 2G + 5G entry for T/Y/K CJP is a CJP WPS pathway only, while other notes restrict joint details. Local dihedral-angle limits and any special mock-up/macrosections for one-side, no-backing T/Y/K work remain separate checks.

A box-tube coupon or a plate coupon cannot silently stand in for a pipe butt or T/Y/K test. Use only a transfer rule that names the test and target category, then preserve its diameter, joint-detail and thickness conditions exactly.

Finish the diameter determination from the actual records

  1. Lock the contract edition and its applicable amendment/errata basis.
  2. Copy the coupon type, nominal pipe OD category, measured test diameter, wall thickness or PJP groove depth, weld type, position, connection and backing/backgouging detail from the PQR and reports.
  3. Use Table 10.8 for the target position and connection class, including its footnotes; do not use it as the dimensional range.
  4. Use Table 10.9 for CJP diameter and thickness. For PJP or fillet, first use Tables 10.10 or 10.11 for their own scope, then apply their reference to Table 10.9 for diameter.
  5. If relying on a plate-test T/Y/K route, document Clause 10.14.3, the target nominal OD of at least 24 in [600 mm], and the Figure 10.17 detail.
  6. Intersect that result with actual test acceptance, material combination, positions, essential variables, CVN conditions and the requested production joint. If any required coupon fact or result is missing, record the diameter conclusion as unresolved.

The PQR coverage matrix can retain coupon dimensions, target joint, table row, source record and final WPS range as separate entries. The position guide explains how the Table 10.8 test and production columns differ.

Code basis and limits

Basis: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 base edition plus registered AWS errata dated July 28, 2026; AMD1 is not included. Principal provisions are Clause 10.12–10.14.3 and Tables 10.8–10.11, including applicable footnotes; Table 10.8 reflects the registered errata. The controlled contract edition governs a project. This guide is a bounded review aid and does not determine whether a specific PQR passed or issue a production WPS.
