ASTM A992 WPS: what the Group II listing answers
AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025 Table 5.6 lists ASTM A992 in Group II without a separate grade or thickness qualifier in the curated entry. That answers the material-group input for filler matching. It does not establish that a proposed weld is prequalified or that a particular filler product is suitable.
Group II is a filler-matching input
Table 5.7 contains Group II classification families by process. Examples include SMAW A5.1 E7015/E7016/E7018/E7028 and GMAW A5.18 ER70S-X (excluding -G), E70C-XC and E70C-XM. FCAW and SAW have their own listed classification patterns and exclusions. Confirm the full AWS classification and the actual manufacturer's product data; the group alone does not determine electrode position, shielding-gas fit, operating parameters or project CVN performance.
Where the other base metal belongs to another group, apply the mixed-group rule for the actual pair and verify any design matching requirement. An A992 Group II listing cannot be transferred to an unlisted material just because it has similar strength or is used in a similar structural shape.
Preheat is checked under a different table
For the 2025 basis, the curated Table 5.11 entry places A992 in Category B for low-hydrogen SMAW, SAW, GMAW and FCAW. For a 25 mm member under one of those process conditions, the Category B SI thickness step is 10°C. This is a minimum table step for the stated assumptions; calculate the actual joint requirement from both materials, the thickest part at the weld, starting temperature, process/electrode condition and any project limits.
Do not infer preheat from “Group II,” from the filler classification, or from a generic thickness value. Table 5.6 and Table 5.11 answer different questions.
A992 listing is not WPS eligibility
A prequalified procedure requires all applicable requirements to fit, including both materials and their combination, process sequence, filler, joint design, position, thickness range, gas/flux conditions and temperature controls. Project specifications may add further requirements. The exact A992 material identity must be supported by project records.
If the prequalified route does not apply, examine a customer's existing PQR against its actual qualification test and coverage. Table 5.6's Group II listing is not a PQR qualification extension.
