ASTM A500 Grade B/C HSS WPS: separate the material lookup from the joint
For verified ASTM A500 Grade B or C, Table 5.6 lists Group I and Table 5.11 lists both Category A and Category B. The preheat category depends on the SMAW electrode condition or process. An A500 HSS product identification does not, by itself, decide which tubular connection detail or qualification path applies.
A500 grade, filler group and preheat are separate inputs
| Verified product grade | Table 5.6 | Table 5.11 process condition | 25 mm example, SI table step |
|---|---|---|---|
| A500 Grade B or C | Group I | Category A: SMAW with non-low-hydrogen electrodes | 65°C minimum step |
| A500 Grade B or C | Group I | Category B: low-hydrogen SMAW, SAW, GMAW or FCAW | 10°C minimum step |
The example uses a 25 mm member and the listed process assumption. It shows why the process/electrode condition changes the Table 5.11 step while the A500 material-group result remains Group I. For the actual joint, check both base metals, use the applicable thickness at the weld, apply the higher governing minimum and include other code and project conditions.
Group I is only the Table 5.7 matching input. Confirm the complete filler classification and exclusions, applicable gas or flux combination, product operating limits and any project requirements.
An HSS product is not a connection qualification
ASTM A500 identifies the product and grade. Where the member and construction fall within AWS D1.1 Clause 10, that clause addresses the tubular member and its actual weld connection. A round, square or rectangular HSS may be used in a butt, fillet or T/Y/K connection; those joint types do not share one blanket detail. Identify the drawing geometry, CJP/PJP/fillet type, backing and backgouging, position, process and production conditions before selecting the applicable Clause 10 branch.
| Production weld question | Code path to inspect | What remains specific to the project |
|---|---|---|
| Tubular fillet | Clause 10.8.1 and Figure 10.5 | Connection geometry, local dimensions and applicable Clause 5 conditions |
| T/Y/K PJP groove | Clause 10.9.1 and Figure 10.6 | Permitted process, joint detail dimensions and any matched-box checks |
| T/Y/K CJP, one side without backing | Clause 10.10.2 and Figures 10.7–10.9 | Local dihedral angle, selected detail and its exact dimensions and limitations |
| Existing-PQR tubular coverage | Clause 10.13–10.14 and Tables 10.8–10.11, as applicable | Actual test assembly, weld type, position, dimensions, detail, backing and PQR record |
These are distinct branches, not a claim that every listed detail is available for every A500 assembly. The Table 5.6 material entry and a product certificate do not replace the joint-specific Clause 10 review. A plate PQR also does not automatically establish tubular T/Y/K coverage.
What this A500 check does not establish
- Confirm the exact ASTM A500 grade and product records; do not assign Grade B/C from the HSS shape or a nominal strength description.
- Table 5.6 listing alone does not establish Clause 5 prequalification. Check the material combination, process, filler, joint, position, thickness, temperature and every other applicable requirement.
- For a PQR-based procedure, use the traceable PQR and the qualification branch for the real tubular weld. A material group is not a PQR coverage result.
- Do not infer that a general plate qualification covers tubular T/Y/K joints or that all HSS connections use one standard detail.
